The Coral-Eclipse: The Race I Always Look Forward To
For me, the Coral-Eclipse is one of the absolute best races of the British flat season. I always look forward to it. It’s a Group 1 race held at Sandown Park, and it’s a real cracker—it’s just over a mile and a quarter, with that tough, uphill finish that really tests the horses.
What makes it so special is that it’s the first time the top three-year-olds get to take on the older horses. It’s like a showdown between the new superstars and the established champions.
This race has a pretty amazing history. It’s been going since 1886 and is named after a legendary racehorse called Eclipse who was unbeatable. The prize money this year is a record £1 million, which is incredible.
Just look at the horses who have won it over the years: Sea The Stars, Enable, Golden Horn, and most recently, City of Troy in 2024. Seeing those names on the winner’s list just shows you how important this race is.
I always pay attention to a few things when I’m looking at the runners. Aidan O’Brien has a fantastic record as a trainer, and I’m always keeping an eye on his horses. I also know that jockeys like Ryan Moore have been a big part of the recent history here.
It’s a tough race, but that’s why I love it. I’m already counting down the days until the 2025 race on Saturday, July 5th!
